Absalom Mqibelo Mavuso from Pretoria is another remarkable beneficiary who has found the path back to hope.
At 77, Absalom has lived through many painful times, including being torn apart from his family during forced removals. Yet perhaps his greatest challenge was when his world went dark.
What began as itchy eyes developed into a brown film that slowly robbed him of much of his vision.
“Darkness took over completely. I became heavily reliant on my brother’s family. I longed to get back even a little independence,” he recalls.
As one of 15 participants in our Orientation and Mobility Training programme, funded by the Gauteng Department of Health, Absalom got his wish.
Now, armed with precious tools like his white cane and money template, he can walk independently to a nearby tuckshop to buy basic necessities.
“For the first time since losing my sight, I can also make my own tea without asking for help, using a liquid level indicator,” he says happily.
These small accomplishments represent great dignity and freedom to those who have lost their sight.
With his white cane in hand and renewed confidence in his abilities, Absalom is living proof that it is never too late to learn, adapt, and overcome!
